For Parents

Research suggests that parents/guardians can have a very positive effect on children’s learning by being involved in their schooling. In LSSD our schools value, encourage and support parent involvement in their child’s education.
The most effective form of involvement for supporting children’s learning occurs when parents/guardians communicate positively with their children about school to convey that they value education and expect their children to as well.
Studies show that a family’s engagement has a direct positive impact on a child’s learning success. When families are engaged in their children’s school lives, students have the home support they need to develop a lifelong love of learning.

Children with families engaged in their education are more likely to:
• Develop self-confidence and motivation in the classroom
• Have better social skills and classroom behaviour
• Have a positive attitude towards learning
• Graduate from high school
• Become a life-long learner

Our schools communicate regularly with parents/guardians in a variety of ways which include email, phone calls, newsletters, social media forums and in person meetings. There are scheduled opportunities throughout the school year to connect with school staff that include: Meet the Staff Events, School Concerts, Student Learning Conferences, field trips, and several others. Parents/guardians do not need to wait for these events to speak with their child’s teacher and are encouraged to reach out to their child’s teacher(s) early in the school year to discuss any concerns.
